Project Title: An investigation of Bluetooth 5

Project Description:

Bluetooth 5 has been adopted in Dec 2016 as the latest Bluetooth specification, developer boards are already available and it anticipated to be available in smartphones/devices before end of this year.

An investigation of Bluetooth (5+) and associated profiles will be undertaken, and a deep comparison of different strategies for identifying and connecting in particular to low data rate devices will be explored through both research and implementation. The use and impact of advertising transmissions will be explored. Performance and security features available will be analysed. The technology will be tested and an appropriate API developed to support various categories of devices.

Focus: Bluetooth, Short range Wireless, Mobile Application Development.

Project Title: Mobile phone based NFC capabilities for use in assisted living
Course Suitability: BEng/BSc

Project Description:

Near Field Communication (NFC), is a short-range high frequency wireless communication technology to exchange data over short distances (centimeters)  based on the ISO14443 standard.  It is expected that in the near future NFC will proliferate in mobile phones and other devices.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is an umbrella term that captures the methods, concepts, ICT devices and services to aid daily living for people who need assistance, in this case the elderly.

This project will investigate the use of NFC for aiding the elderly in their daily tasks such to record and remind them of particular activities, or to select activities e.g. call a person by bringing phone to photo,  using smart posters for questionnaires, and the ability to more easily adopt technology through ‘touch’ based registrations and setups etc. A demonstrable application is anticipated.

Project Title: Mobile phone as a pointer
Course Suitability: BEng

Project Description:

The project aims to investigate the potential of using mobile phones for accurate pointing, to near and/or far objects. In particular, instances, the mobile can act as remote input and output device e.g. activating a light, rotating a dial etc.

In the project, use will be made of accelerometers, magnetometers, compass, gyroscopes and will involve the exploration and development of new algorithms.

Focus: Sensors, Mathematics, Algorithms, Mobile Application Development.
