Project Title: OpenFlow / Software Defined Networking

Project Description:

Traditionally Internet router’s forwarding decision has been made based on the destination address Software-defined networking (SDN) explicitly seperates the data plane & control plane by implementing these control plane functions as a separate service on a typical remote “controller”. OpenFlow is the predominant SDN protocol, for instance Google has a dedicated WAN interconnecting its data centers called B4 that uses an SDN control plane built on OpenFlow.

This project concerns the study of the protocol, using it and studying benefits (eg increased LAN utilisation)

Project Description:

Investigation of various internet security issues and how to defend against them eg Simple   Man-in-the-Middle attack on a LAN, and then show how to implement DHCP Snooping, ARP Inspection, and source verification, and then show how they protect against the attack.

Investigation into building a system that can remotely monitor potential rust in for example condensation on stove pipes in holiday homes due to infrequent heating. Development of Arduino based system.

In the context of Real time Systems. The candidate will code the algorithms in a high level programming language and port them on to a suitable device for instance the Intel Edison or Curie
